Baeker IAIP is located in Baeker Town of Kafta Humera Woreda in the Western Zone of Tigray Region. It is designed to serve the productive lowland agricultural areas famous for sesame and other oilseeds.
Although activity has been constrained by conflict in recent years, the Baeker Integrated Agro-Industrial Park remains a core part of the national IAIP program and is intended to become the processing hub for Western Tigray’s commercial crops.
1. Metropolitan Anchor Meets Rural Engine
The park is planned as the industrial node for the Humera–Wolkayt–Tsegede agricultural belt, with supporting RTCs for aggregation of sesame, sorghum and other crops.
2. Core Value Chains & High-Value Processing
| Value Chain | Primary Input Commodities | Industrial Output & Processing Focus |
|---|---|---|
| Oilseeds | Sesame, other oilseeds | Cleaning, grading, oil extraction, refining, packaging |
| Cereals | Sorghum, maize | Milling, animal feed, storage |
| Other crops | Pulses, spices | Cleaning, packaging, value addition |
3. Transforming the Rural Hinterland
Once fully operational, the park and its RTCs will provide reliable market linkages for commercial farmers and smallholders in Western Tigray, reducing dependence on raw export of sesame and improving local value retention.
4. Infrastructure & Investor Support
Advanced-Stage Investor Framework
Supported by Ethiopia’s national industrial strategy and partners including the African Development Bank (AfDB) and UNIDO, Baeker IAIP was designed with the same turnkey infrastructure and one-stop services as the other national IAIPs.
Pre-Fabricated Industrial Sheds
Standardized layouts ready for oilseed and cereal processing.
Environmental Compliance
Integrated CETP planned for the park.
One-Stop Service
On-site registration and licensing facilities.
Layered Capital Support
National incentives plus development-partner backing.
The Broader Impact
Baeker IAIP is intended to transform Western Tigray from a raw-commodity export zone into a value-adding agro-industrial area, creating local jobs and retaining more of the economic benefit of the region’s high-quality sesame and oilseed production.
