Yirgalem Integrated Agro-Industrial Park (IAIP)

Agro-Industrial Transformation in Sidama — leveraging Hawassa metropolitan strength to pull rural agriculture into high-value industrial chains

Yirgalem IAIP is located about 40 km south of Hawassa in south-central Sidama Region. It benefits from the growing Hawassa metropolitan economy, excellent road connections, and one of Ethiopia’s richest horticultural and coffee-producing hinterlands.

The Yirgalem Integrated Agro-Industrial Park has already begun generating export revenue (notably avocado oil) and serves as a model for linking smallholders to industrial processing.

1. Metropolitan Anchor Meets Rural Engine

Hawassa provides the metropolitan anchor; Yirgalem is the dedicated agro-processing hub linked to a network of RTCs.

3. Transforming the Rural Hinterland

RTCs in Dilla, Yirgachefe, Bule, Daye, Aletawendo and Hawela Tula aggregate produce from Sidama’s dense smallholder landscape, dramatically reducing post-harvest losses—especially for perishable avocado and other fruits—and raising farmer incomes through direct contracts.

4. Infrastructure & Investor Support

Advanced-Stage Investor Framework

Supported by Ethiopia’s national industrial strategy and partners including the African Development Bank (AfDB) and UNIDO, Yirgalem IAIP offers ready infrastructure and one-stop services. It is already operational with multiple factories producing for both domestic and export markets.

Pre-Fabricated Industrial Sheds

Ready manufacturing layouts with power, water and telecom.

Environmental Compliance

Integrated CETP for wastewater treatment.

One-Stop Service

On-site registration, customs and licensing.

Layered Capital Support

National incentives plus AfDB/UNIDO backing.

The Broader Impact

Yirgalem IAIP demonstrates the power of linking a dynamic metropolitan center (Hawassa) with a high-potential agricultural hinterland. It is already generating export earnings (avocado oil) and creating both direct and indirect employment while improving livelihoods for tens of thousands of smallholders.
